Jacqueline owner of jacklines jacuzzi, hires Martin to work as a salesman in her jacuzzi store. he agrees to leave his old job to work

Jacqueline owner of jacklines jacuzzi, hires Martin to work as a salesman in her jacuzzi store. he agrees to leave his old job to work for Jacqueline because she promises to pay him double what he used to make (he was making $12.00 an hour before, and she promises to pay him $24.00 per hour). she promises him full time Work for the first 18 months and says she will decide whether to keep him on after those 18 months. The contract was not put in writing. She made him the promise over the telephone. Two months after she hires him, she fires him because she finds someone else who agrees to pay for $13.00 an hour. Martin is so upset about losing his job that he decides to go backpacking in the mountains of Canada to get away from it all. He stays away for two years and when he returns, Martin sues Jaclyn for 16 months' salary - the amount he would have made if she had kept her promise and he had continued working for her for the full 19 months.

I have 3 questions about this topic.

1. Did this contract need to be in writing? Why?

2. in a breach of contract lawsuit, will the court likely give him the full amount of damages he is asking for? why or why not. What type of damages is he seeking.

3. how does the concept of the duty to mitigate apply to this case?
