Janice is a fifteen-year-old who takes a keen interest in acting and dancing. She wishes to learn Bollywood dancing but her parents are not willing to pay for dance lessons as they feel that there is no career in dancing. Janice's aunt happens to know a choreographer named Roy who runs a dance academy and teaches Bollywood dancing. The aunt arranges for Janice to meet Roy at his dance academy.
During the meeting, Roy tells Janice that he would be happy to teach her to dance free of charge provided Janice signs with a three-year contract. Terms of the contract include that during the three years, Janice must not take any professional stage engagements from anyone else apart from that organised by Roy. The contract also states that Janice would be paid for the stage performances but Roy was under no obligation to organise stage performances or to employ her. Additionally, the contract could be terminated at any time by Roy. Janice signs the contract.
After 1 year, Janice is approached by Pam to perform at a concert. Janice accepts this stage engagement as she was not getting adequate payment from Roy for her stage performances. Roy sues Janice for breach of contract.
