Jay and Julie, who attendedManhattan College were good friends. As summer vacation grew closer, they both needed a good job to earn money for tuition and return to their studies in the fall.

They chatted over coffee one day and hatched a scheme to do some landscaping work. Jay knew a little about landscaping since his brother had a summer job working forBeauti-Yards Ltd. a few years ago. Juliedidn'tknow much about thebusinessbuthow hard could it be? Mow a few lawns, plant a few plants...

They each chipped in their last $250, hoping to buy a used rototiller and a lawnmower. Unfortunately, that was not enough, so Julie's uncle Stan lent Julie an additional $250 to buy the equipment.

Their first job was for AgnesAngsworth. Agnes had a beautiful yard, and she loved her garden. She also loved her award-winningmartagonlilies. She had a lovely patch of them planted, which she intended to enter in a flower show later in the summer.

Jay and Julie were hired to do some weeding in her garden patch and rototill the soil in preparation for planting. She specifically warned the two to "watch out for my lilies!!" Jay took charge of running the tiller while Julie started the weeding. Unfortunately, Jay had no clue where the garden patchstopped andwhere the lily patch began. He barely knew what a plant from a weed, never mind being able to spot the tender shoots of the emerging lilies. When Agnes came out to inspect their work, she promptly fainted on the spot. Her belovedmartagonlilies were a shredded mess.

Agnes sued Jay and Julie for the cost of replacing the lily patch$5,000. Julie says there is no way she's responsible. Jay was the problem, not her! Do you agree?
