Joe and Sally were each born and have lived their entire lives in Lebanon, New Hampshire. They were high school sweethearts. They were both strong in their love for each other and their love of faith. Joe was a Jehovah's Witness, and Sally converted when she fell in love with Joe. Together they are raising three children in a warm, supportive marriage in a community of Jehovah's Witnesses. New Hampshire law requires that all automobiles bear license plates embossed with the state motto, "Live Free or Die." Joe and Sally are offended by this motto. Joe believes his faith teaches that life is more valuable than freedom. It is quite simply a motto that offends their religious sensibilities. Pursuant to their beliefs, Joe and Sally began covering up the motto on their license plates. It is against New Hampshire law to obscure any part of the license plate. They wish to set an example for their children, but Joe and Sally have been arrested three times for obscuring the motto on their license plate.
