Joe and Sam have worked for North London Daily (NLD) for ten years and both are paid a regular wage by the newspaper. Joe is responsible for writing short articles, which Sam then edits. NLD has recently suffered a sharp fall in sales and as a result decided to cut costs by making a number of its personnel redundant, starting with its delivery staff.

One afternoon Joe was instructed to deliver a large batch of newspapers to an NLD distributor, despite only recently having acquired a driving licence. NLD told Joe that the delivery is urgent and that they do not care how exactly he did it, as long as the papers got there on time. In addition, Joe was under strict orders not to take any passengers with him. Sam, not wishing to be left alone in the office, insisted on accompanying Joe.

Joe, being under pressure to deliver on time, broke the allowed speed limit and collided with another vehicle. As a consequence, Sam was badly injured and underwent painful surgery and a prolonged hospital treatment.
