Joe Monroe works hard. He has worked at a factory where his father also worked and supports his wife and their 2 sons age 16 and 20. Margaret and Joe have had increasing arguments about his drinking. Joe feels this is unjustified after all he goes to the bar with his dad after work with the other guys from the factory to have a few beers then he goes home. If my dad can go to the bar for the past 50 years it should be ok for me. On weekends hell have a six-pack or two daily. He has always provided for his family though. He admits on questioning he had a hard childhood, there was never enough money, his mother was often sad but worked hard to hold things together , and at times his father was abusive to both her and the children but he states that this was due to the long hours he worked and that he was tired according to their mother. He does not understand Margarets nagging and quite frankly tells you it is becoming a divider in their marriage. What needs to be done? What plan of action would you incorporate? Joe is 63. His father is 83 and still working although not on the machines any more he does custodial work at the factory. Over the years Margaret has tried to address this problem but both father and son would side against her. She worries about the example they are showing their sons and the effect this has had on their relationship. She states she doesnt know how she feels about Joe anymore.
