John wants to buy a new car. Alan, a friend of his from church, works at a local car dealership and is constantly insisting that John come in if he wants a good deal on a new car. John has known Alan for several years and has heard only good things about him. Upon a visit to the dealership, John is greeted by Alan very warmly and they proceed to share a long conversation about all sorts of things. Alan proceeds to tell John about how he always puts customers first and is very reliable. However, once John begins asking basic questions about the cars, Alan frequently has to check catalogs to refresh is memory about different models, colors, and options. Alan seems to know nothing about any of the cars and is forced to continually ask his coworkers for assistance remembering many of the specs. After this fiasco at the dealership, Alan's recommendations come with little significance in John's eyes.
