John works for a Tier 1 automotive supplier as the Production Manager at the company’s facility in Plymouth, Michigan. The company has experienced steady growth in recent years, and with the coming of the new USMCA trade deal, the company anticipates a sharp increase in the demand for its products. To meet the extra demand, the company decided to open a new plant in Alabama, and John will be the new Plant Manager when it opens on May 1, 2020 (11 weeks from today!).

John is married with two children, ages 3 and 6; and his wife Sarah is 5 months pregnant. John does not have much experience with project management since his job as Production Manager normally entails routine activities. John and Sarah are anxious about the pending move. Help them to develop a project plan to smooth the transition. Some important constraints to keep in mind:

  • Sarah considered staying in Michigan until after the baby’s birth but decided against it.
  • Because Sarah is well along in her pregnancy, the family needs to live in a place with good access to medical facilities.
  • Sarah has decided to stay home after the birth of the baby and won’t need a job in Alabama.
  • Their first-born child is in school and will need to enroll in a new school in Alabama.
  • John and Sarah currently live in a home they own in Farmington Hills, Michigan. There is no mortgage on the home. As a moving incentive, the company has agreed to buy the home from them at 10% above fair-market value. However, a condition of the offer is that the family has to complete the move by May 1 st , 2020; or earlier.

Questions:

  • Identify the important stakeholders in the project.
  • Identify the key tasks and subtasks that have to be accomplished as part of the project.
  • Identify, appropriate dependency relationships between tasks or subtasks.
  • Give reasonable estimates of task or subtask durations (in weeks)
  • Develop a WBS for the project.
  • Assign responsibilities for executing the various tasks or subtasks.
  • Construct a Gantt chart for the project.
