Johnny was a troubled teen. His problems began when his parents divorced. He started smoking, began drinking and later moved on to alcohol and began to experiment on drugs. One night, on his 18th birthday, while drunk and stoned he broke into his neighbor's, the Robinson's, garage and took their ATV out for a "joy" ride. Johnny wrecked and totaled the ATV. He was passed out next to the ATV, mildly hurt, when the police found him at 4 a.m. Johnny was arrested and charged with DUI, and felony vehicle theft and breaking and entering. Johnny's mother, Sue, was beside herself. Johnny's school counselor, Betty, had been warning Johnny and Sue that Johnny was in danger of not graduating, due to poor grades. The Robinson's had helped Johnny and Sue over the years. The Robinson's were pretty upset and felt betrayed, yet they are not sure they want the full force of the law coming down on Johnny and are concerned about Sue.
