Journal Assignment For this unit, you will be asked to keep a sketchbook/journal (or both). This can be a combination of images and writing in response to the memoir. You will be required to make an entry for each of the 5 sections of the novel. Facing History and Ourselves has given each section a sample title, but you should create your own title for each section. Sections: SECTION 1. "Defining Identity" (3-22) SECTION 2. "Initiation to Auschwitz" (23-46) SECTION 3. "Identity and Indifference" (47-65) SECTION 4. "Faith and Survival" (66-84) SECTION 5. "The Importance of Memory" (85-115) Your writing can take a variety of forms and genres, and you should include more than one genre in a reflection (example a letter with a poem in it or a journal with a definition of an important concept). You can sketch memorable scenes & symbols (or find an image on the internet or in magazines). You can include links or samples of other texts you think of when you are reading (music, images, film, literature, newspaper articles), but you need to address how they relate to your topic. The written entries should focus on your response to the literature and should NOT be merely chapter summaries. They should include comments about your thoughts and feelings and the connections you make while reading. Each journal entry should address either memory, responsibility, or witness as they tie directly to our essential questions, but you have the freedom to reflect on other ideas that connect to your journal responses or incorporate the other great ideas we've looked at through the course. Journal Requirements: 5 entries 1-1.5 pages each A creative component in each entry (poetry, music, art, sketches, etc) Each journal should reflect on one of the following: memory, responsibility, or witness Includes specific references or quotes to the text Sample Forms/Genres You Might Connect: Traditional Journal or Diary Entry Extended Definition (does a word catch your attention?) Night ELIE WIESEL Letter (to a character, to someone else you know, to our class, to the editor, to a family member) Compare/Contrast Poetry (Narrative, Free Form, Found, etc.) Research (maybe you've found something within the pages you need/want to study more) Drawing Images Process/Instruction Persuasive Speech or Argument (do you feel strongly about an issue brought forth in the pages?)
