Let's begin by nailing down some terms: Journal article What is the difference between a "journal" and a "journal article"? Many people who have grown up in the internet era aren't sure. This is because they may never have held a physical journal in their hands. Basically, though, a journal is a collection of articles (i.e., "journal articles."). Just as one issue of the magazine People or Sports Illustrated will contain many different articles on different topics and by different authors, one issue of a journal will contain different articles on different topics and by different authors. Peer-reviewed "Peer review" is a form of gatekeeping. Before an article is published in a peer-reviewed journal, other experts on the topic review the article and assess its quality. The article cannot be published unless these reviewers find that the work is good enough to justify its publication. (This is the ideal. Reality doesn't always align with the ideal, of course.) The purpose of the activity that follows is to help you develop-or further develop-strategies for quickly finding scholarly articles relevant to your research project (and to inquiries
