One of the best leaders I have worked with was a supervisor I had in my last job with the Air Force. This leader exemplified the principles of personability, professionalism, and empowerment. She allowed teams to work with significant autonomy, providing needed resources and intervening when necessary. In addition to being my supervisor, she was the operations flight commander (equivalent to an operations manager), responsible for over sixty individuals across five work centers. During her three-year tenure, she positively impacted the organization and helped many individuals realize their professional goals. She wielded power in an assertive style, respecting others, communicating directly and effectively, and directly addressing conflicts and problems to obtain satisfactory resolutions (Levi and Askay, 2021). She inspired others to be their best.

This leader used her influence to benefit her workers, liaising with different organizations to secure project and task support. She empowered her teams to make decisions at the lowest possible level, allowing for mistakes and failures, using them as opportunities to teach and promote growth. She was personable without becoming overly familiar, spending time with individual employees to learn their aspirations while exploring development options with the individuals to help them achieve their goals. She translated how a team's contribution helped achieve organizational goals. This leader inspired her coworkers and subordinates to excel by interacting in a manner that conveyed respect, concern, and value to individuals and teams alike.

I have worked with many great leaders and they have all made a lasting impact. The one time that a leader used their power and social influence for the good, was when our department had a new department head, and that person was also over the sales guy's in our company. We were able to see how the product we use, is sold, and got to see the bigger picture on how our product actually helped others, and how we made dealerships more profitable. Another part of this influence was he helped others think on their feet, and that is something that is needed in a sales environment. While we heavily depended on scripts for our call center before, this person wanted us to go rouge, and follow the flow of the conversation, engage with the customer, and even encouraged the agents to not be too pushy. He taught agents how to "read the room" but on a phone call. This helped us tremendously, numbers wise.

Another way his social influenced worked for the good, was he got a policy in place for agents to get a longer break in just this department. Being on the phone all day is a tough job, I do not believe I could do it. Agents were given two ten minute breaks a day before this leader, and while the leader was in charge, he made a company policy change to allow 30 extra minutes. This would allow agents to get off the phone, especially after a tough call, to gain their composure and get their mind ready for the next call. This helped a lot on the sales sides of things, and our numbers improved. By letting people have longer breaks in just this department, ultimately others wanted to grow and move to our department, just for the longer break. This allowed our department to grow, especially when we needed it. This department is known to be hard to work in, since it is cold sales, and hearing about the extra break time, convinced others to give it a shot.
