Justin is a 37-year-old, middle-class man. He had attended a private school. When he was about 20 years old, he had problems in his love life - "a heartbreaking time" - and suffered great distress. He went three days without eating or sleeping and says he felt disconnected from reality: "I was totally delirious. I wasn't there at all." In 1990, he was admitted to hospital and the psychiatrist diagnosed him as schizophrenia. He subsequently lived in a group home for two years. In 1998, he returned to and completed his studies. He now works in his field and feels better. "I'm proud of what I'm doing now and what I've accomplished and that I can communicate and deal with people". He explains how his desire to pull through helped him to get over his problems: "My goal every afternoon was that I had to get out. I began to push myself towards something all the time." He makes the point that he has relationships outside his psychiatric social network and that he opens himself up to others. Justin has not been hospitalized in the past five years. He is working full time in his field and considers himself autonomous.
