Kash is 82 years old. He has lived with his wife, Tamia, aged 80 years, for 52 years. They met when they were both international students from India and studying at the same Australian university. They were very happy when, after graduation, they applied for and were granted, permanent residency in Australia. Kash and Tamia have not been able to have children but have nevertheless lived a happy life together, making many friends from Australian, Indian and other CALD backgrounds. Kash has been Tamia's carer for the last 3 years since she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. When Kash and Tamia first learned of this diagnosis, they decided that they would maintain their independence and stay in their own home for as long as possible. However, Kash is finding that caring for Tamia is becoming increasingly difficult as her memory deteriorates and as she now needs 24-hour supervision and assistance with all activities of daily living. Kash can no longer play the occasional game of golf and is unable to participate in the board games he has enjoyed playing with friends. Kash is increasingly distressed by the situation and feels guilty because he is no longer able to care for his wife. Kash is now looking for an aged care facility where Tamia can feel safe and at home. However, he finds that many facilities are reluctant to accept her without him because she has reverted to speaking in their original Indian language. Tamia now seems unable to converse in English. Kash does not wish to move into an aged care facility given that he continues to be independent and is able to care for himself. He would prefer to visit Tamia on a regular basis. There seems to be no suitable aged care facility currently available. Kash is worried about how much longer he can care for Tamia, and he is unsure of what other options he could consider. What is the person's stage in the lifespan? According to Erikson's Psychosocial Theory, what challenge is the person facing?
