Core Value in the NASW Code of Ethics

The core value in the NASW Code of Ethics I have chosen is "Importance of Human Relationships." The ethical principle of this value is understanding that relationships between and among people are an essential motivator for change (NASW, 2021). Change happens both within and between people making human relationships central to social work practice (Segal & Steiner, 2019). Social workers strive to improve relationships among people to promote, restore, maintain, and enhance the well-being of individuals, families, social groups, organizations, and communities (NASW, 2021).

Scenario Upholding Values

When working at Able Incorporated, where I assisted individuals with disabilities, building solid and trusting relationships was one of our core values. Creating trusting relationships enhanced the individuals' well-being and also strengthened our relationships with their family members and the community. Seeing each person for who they are and not their disability helped the individuals know they are valued and respected, which helped increase overall well-being, confidence, trust, and independence.
