Kerstdagen, Natale, Jul, and Weihnachten are (fictional) Member States of the EU. In Kerstdagen and Jul, roast turkey is an essential part of the Christmas day lunch and therefore most families buy at least one turkey for the occasion. During the remainder of the year, interest in the purchase of turkeys is limited. In Natale people traditionally prefer duck for their Christmas lunch, while in Weihnachten they prefer carp.

Kerstdagen and Jul have thriving turkey farms. In Weihnachten the farms are exclusively geared towards the export of turkeys to other Member States since there is hardly any domestic interest in turkeys. Natale never developed domestic turkey farms since, until about two years ago, there had been hardly any domestic interest in turkeys. However, recently many inhabitants of Natale have been adopting customs from Jul by eating turkey rather than duck for Christmas. There are thriving duck farms in Natale.

In September 2017, the government of Jul bans the sale of turkeys in supermarkets and limits their sale to family butchers. Turkey farms in Jul traditionally sell their turkeys through family butchers, whereas turkey farmers from Kerstdagen and Weihnachten had been selling their turkeys in Jul exclusively through supermarkets there. The government of Jul argues that limiting the sale of turkeys to family butchers is required as a measure for the survival of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) in general and the 'national institution' of the family butcher in particular.

In October 2017, the government of Natale bans the sale of turkeys until further notice. A study by the University of Natale found that the consumption of turkey over Christmas could lead to weight gain and would therefore be detrimental to public health. It recommends the consumption of duck for Christmas.

In November 2017, the government of Kerstdagen prohibits the import of turkeys from other Member States until the end of December. Turkey farmers in Kerstdagen, who have considerable political influence, are upset about the import of cheaper turkeys from other Member States. They have in the past resorted to violence and during a recent protest in front of the Ministry of Agriculture the minister was slapped in the face by a protesting turkey farmer. The government of Kerstdagen argues that the temporary ban on turkey imports is required to prevent further public unrest.
