Project name: 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games C

lient: Brisbane 2032 Olympic Organising Committee

Start date: 1 January 2025

Location: Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Budget: AUD $35 billion

Timeframe: 7 years

Project Background

On 21 July 2021 and at a ceremony in Tokyo, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) officially announced Brisbane as the third Australian city (after Melbourne and Sydney) to host the 2032 Summer Olympics and Paralympics games. Brisbane Opening Ceremony is now set for 23 July 2032 and will be held at The Gabba Stadium at the heart of Brisbane CBD. The scope of the work is all the construction and infrastructure projects have to be completed prior to hosting the events such as building new stadiums and venues, improving existing sport facilities and complex, construction of a brand-new Olympic village and improving the Brisbane roads and other infrastructure to host this massive global event. In this case, you should not only focus on the construction aspects of the project. You also need to look at the cultural, social, political and environmental factors contributing on this project.

Example of WBS on The Brisbane 2032 Olympic games project in a table format.

Includes the below:

  • The first level of deliverables are called high-level deliverables, these are generally identified in feasibility stage.
  • The deliverable can be decomposed into sub-deliverables, work-packages and/or activities.
  • The lowest level of deliverable is termed as work package which is decomposed into activities.
  • Deliverable, sub-deliverable, work-package are labelled in NOUN form. They answer the question WHATservice, product or result is being produced. Combined together they will result in the project output. For example - Foundations, Paintwork, Civil works, Website Design, etc.
  • Activities (or tasks) define how a work-package (smallest component of the deliverable) will be achieved. They answer the question HOW the service, product or result is being produced. They are labelled as Action Verb + Noun. For example - Excavate ground, Lay Foundations, Procure Materials, Apply Paint, etc.
