Kitchen Renovation Project

Renovating your kitchen is a project- it's a unique endeavor with specific goals and a defined start and end point.

Like any other project it is important to detail specifications and requirements for the remodeled kitchen before you start to remove all the old flooring, old cabinets, and old appliances. Also, you need to keep a budget in mind and develop your work timeline, work with trustworthy retailers and skilled technicians to arrange installations.

The end point of the project is when the new kitchen is ready to be used with all the new light fixtures, mosaic tile floor, new cabinets, and operating appliances (stove, fridge and dishwasher) which istransitions to daily life in the new kitchen.

You have a few friends interested in helping you with this project (your group members in this course!). As a group, you know you need to arrange for some financing but beyond that, you really don't know what it takes to renovate your kitchen. You decide your first step is to do some research on what it takes to renovate this old kitchen. Once you've each had a chance to do your own research, you agreed to come together as a group.

In this group meeting, everyone will share their ideas on the creation of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) which will graphically depict the deliverables required to successfully renovate your old kitchen.

As a team, create this WBS. The first level of the WBS will be called "Kitchen Renovation".Identify the major deliverables (the 2nd level of the WBS) and the work packages of these major deliverables (the 3rd level of the WBS). Please note - you do not have to identify the individual tasks required as that is too detailed and is reserved for the project schedule and budget.

Assignment Instructions:

This is a group assignment. You and your team are playing the role of the project Team members. Your assignment is to complete the WBS for this "Kitchen Renovation Project".

  1. Your WBS must have at least 3 levels.
  2. You can use any software you like to create your WBS. Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and LucidChart.com are all good alternatives. You may also want to try the WBS creator template specifically designed for Excel(https://infinityexcel.com/wbs-creator-excel-template/).
  3. You must use MS Teams to collaborate on this Assignment. Use the software you chose in #2 above in your brainstorming group meeting. This will allow everyone to add their ideas to the WBS, ensuring it is truly a collective group effort. In addition, this means it's not up to one single person to take the ideas generated during the meeting and transcribe them into the WBS document. For instance, if you choose to create your WBS in Excel, ensure Excel is open and your document is saved in MS Teams. This ensures that everyone will always have access to the latest version of the Assignment.
