Assume that you are a Vice President at an organization with responsibilities to develop new business in South America. You have a team of 4 Directors reporting to you. For the past 3 years, you have traveled, with the 4 Directors, 1 week each month to visit with clients. While this is expensive, you feel it is fundamental to the growth of your business unit.

Further assume that your company has just merged with another in your industry. The new CEO of the merged company does not want to support so much travel. The new CEO has told you that your team may now travel with one of the two travel options below:

  • Option 1: You, as the Vice President, may travel once per month solo to the client site(s), for a total of 3 days; or,
  • Option 2: You, and your team of 4 Directors, may all travel to the client site(s) once per quarter, for a total of 5 days.

First, decide the option you will recommend to your team. You have to select Option 1 or Option 2. You may not select an alternating schedule or some other negotiated option.

1. Then, using Kotter's 1st step, identify how you will establish a sense of urgency for this change.
