Kreider Farms is located just outside Lancaster, PA and processes approximately 820,000 eggs in a 6-h period (and has employed two agricultural engineers, both BE alumni!). There are two poultry houses at Kreider Farms that supply eggs to the processing plant. Each house is 162 m long x 27 m wide with 10 m high sidewalls and holds 470,000 Leghorn laying hens (typical weight = 3 kg). Assume that the attic is well ventilated and heat losses through the floor are negligible. Use 0.4%/99.6% climate design conditions for your calculations.

a) The ceiling of the structure contains 15 cm of glass fiber batt insulation. Accounting only for the insulation and surface film coefficients, estimate the U- value of the structure (based on the ceiling in the winter). (0.27 W/m²-K)

b) SUMMER. Maximum allowable indoor air temperature in the summer is 32°C (or approximately 1°C warmer than the outdoor air based on climate design conditions) The poultry house has an evaporative cooling system with an effectiveness of 80%. What is the ventilation rate require tion rate required for temperature control in air changes per hour (assume poultry house air has relative humidity of -70%)? (58 ACPH)

c) WINTER. Optimal egg production occurs at environmental conditions of 20°C, 50% relative humidity. What is the winter ventilation required to maintain the desired moisture level in the indoor air? Assume the relative humidity of the outdoor air is 80%. (183 kg dry airls) Perform an energy balance to determine the supplemental heat required, if any. (497 kW)
