Lab 3 Budgeting for a Wireless LAN

Chapter 8 in the text deals with planning a wireless LAN deployment. Part of the deployment effort is coming up with a budget of ALL of the needed hardware and software for the proposed WLAN. Below is a listing of the needed elements for the deployment of the LAN.

1. Assume the following for labor costs: a. Analysis and Design of the network - $150 per hour b. Programming/Configuration - $125 per hour c. Installation of the hardware and software - $100 per hour d. Training and Maintenance Costs - $80 per hour

2. You will need to estimate the time needed for each phase of the WLAN implementation (see case study pages 223-225 Acme Enterprises).

3. They need the following hardware: a. 25 IP phones b. 25 bar code scanners (5 per center) c. 125 802.11n devices for the laptops and desktops d. 125 Access Points e. 10 spare 802.11 devices (for above c. and d.) f. 7 wireless controllers g. 2 radius servers h. 2 wi-fi testers and 1 spectrum analyzer i. PoE injector for each access point (125 total)

4. Deployment Services Costs: a. Julie systems analyst will need 3 weeks time to define the requirements b. Frank systems analyst will need 4 weeks time to complete the design c. Sam programmer, will need 60 days for develop and test the software interface d. Frank will need 3 weeks to configure the wireless controllers. e. Susan will need 2 weeks to review the existing support procedures, etc. and 3 weeks to develop and deliver training. f. Fred will assign a trainer for the AIDC system, which he expects to take 2 weeks to complete.

B. Your job is to create a spreadsheet with ALL of the costs for the above system. You will need to do some research on the Internet to find the hardware needed (www.cdw.com, www.newegg.com, www.tigerdirect.com, are a few of the sites you may want to use when shopping). You need to list the following for each item (hardware specifically): Item name, brand, model number, short description, price per item, quantity, and then total price (item price x quantity). You also need to subtotal the hardware, and then the deployment services costs (do the same thing for each service Service being performed, person doing the service, hourly rate, number of hours, and total cost). Then subtotal all of the service costs, and provide a grand total of ALL costs. Please make sure to format your sheet so that it is fairly easy to read, and feel free to provide some formatting that makes it look nice (color, font type, etc.).
