Alsbert Enterprises started out as a sole proprietorship in 1980, with the sole owner of the operation being John J. Alsbert. Mr. Alsbert started his small operation in the little township of Wauway, Texas with a mere investment of Twenty Thousand US Dollars ($20,000US). He was in the business of providing the small town folks with grocery items and some home-made treats which were prepared by this wife Jenny and his mother Mary. The offerings include cakes, pastries and other sweet treats, along with regular grocery items which are sorted by every shopper. They also offered a variety of natural juices to complement the baked products.
The business continuously experience steady growth as there was very little competition in the small community of just over one thousand (1000) residents. The growth of the business was also spurred by the friends and relations of the residents of little Wauway who came to visit and became quite delighted when the tasted the delectable cakes, pastries and treats offered by the Alsberts.Due to its rapid success John decided to expand the business outside of its original location and added two (2) stores to the operation in the two neighbouring communities of Pinehurse and Dillweed.
Upon recognizing the potential of the business to grow even larger if adequate investment was available, John sort to secure investors for the expansion of the business, but it did not stop there. Over the three (3) decades of its existence, Alsbert Enterprises eventually became a large corporation which has expanded extensively, even into international territories, which includes Jamaica.
Alberts Enterprises began it operations in Jamaica during the last year and at that time they hired Mrs. June Gossett to be the head of the Human Resource Department. She was Jamaican national who was well qualified for the job, however, the operators of the business deem it necessary to also train a member of their legal team, Mrs. Mary Ranglin, in the human resource team from their head office in the United States to become privy to the Employment Laws and Regulations in Jamaica. As an expert in this area of law, you were tasked with the responsibility of assisting Mrs. Ranglin to be educated on these matters as it relates to the Jamaican legislations.

a. Discuss any TWO (2) of the employment laws and regulations that would be of concern to the Jamaican employee, which if not administered accurately could cause them to become disgruntled and of the belief that their rights are being infringed. (10 marks)
b. Simone Williams is one of the new employees who has been employed within the last six (6) months of the companys operations. She recently found out that she is six (6) weeks pregnant and is concerned about her eligibility for maternity leave when she became due for delivery. Explain to Simone about the entitlement for maternity leave if her pregnancy falls below the one-year time frame of being employed to the company. (5 marks)
c. Paul Johnson has been employed as a supervisor in the warehouse of the company. There are several pieces of heavy equipment which are used in the handling of raw materials and supplies, however, Paul recognize that there is need for some signage to protect the health of safety of the employees. Explain to importance of health and safety in the work place. (5 marks)
d. Abdul is a Muslim who has been employed by the company one month ago. He overheard a group of employee discussing the issue that Muslims are often terrorists and has resorted to calling him a derogatory name as an insult. Advise the employees about policies against discrimination in the workplace. (5 marks)
