Landmine Publishing House Pte Ltd ("LPH") is an independent publishing company based in Singapore. They specialize in publishing fiction and non-fiction books for the adult and young adult market. Timothy Tan, a local journalist focusing on politics in Europe, was approached by LPH who was interested in publishing a book on the policies of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. A contract was then signed on 2 January 2021 between Timothy and LPH for Timothy to write a book on Vladimir Putin to be published by LPH. Timothy was to send LPH the first draft of his manuscript no later than 31 May 2022. The publication of the book was targeted for January 2023. According to the contract, Timothy was to be paid $50,000 once the manuscript was approved by LPH. On 28 Feb 2022, the Singapore government announced in parliament that it intended to impose sanctions against Russia for the war on Ukraine. Even though the announcement did not impact LPH, the management of LPH decided that it would no longer publish the book on Vladimir Putin because it would go against its business ethos. LPH wrote to Timothy on 1 Mar 2022 to inform him of its position and to thank him for his effort. By that time, Timothy had written at least half of the manuscript. Timothy approached you to get your advice. Advise him on the following: (a) Define "discharge of a contract" and briefly explain FOUR (4) ways a contract may be discharged. (b) Discuss the LEGAL PRINCIPLES concerning the above case study, APPLY the legal principles, and CONCLUDE on whether (i) the contract between Timothy and LPH was discharged; and (ii) Timothy could recover any money from LPH
