Lawrence's article "On Racist Speech" (p. 56) says that racist speech should not be tolerated and should constitute an exception to First Amendment free speech rights. Lately several university presidents lost their jobs for their lawyerly, "it depends," answers to the question of whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated [their universities'] code of conduct. And former president Trump was ordered to pay $83 million dollars for defaming E. Jean Carroll. If we carve out additional exceptions to the First Amendment right to free speech, for example barring racist or hate speech, is that a slippery slope that will weaken our free speech rights, or is it an enlightened approach to a more kind society?
