I really need to find myself in terms of establishing a solid career trajectory. This is not a secret for me, unfortunately. When I went to CSU Chico, I pursued a degree I tried to convince myself that I was interested in. I tried to be a high school teacher, and that crashed and burned. I joined the military as a hard reset to hopefully find something more permanent, but it ended up being a temporary opportunity for a reset. Defense contracting ended up being a "pause" for me that I got sucked into for a long time because while the money was easy, I knew the lifestyle was not sustainable for a long time. Sure, the pay was fantastic, but contracts drop all the time and I had to move five times in five years chasing contracts just to get the hint. At that point, I knew the mobile life wasn't for me and it was time to sit down and work on something more concrete. I made the decision that I did not want to move anymore, and that it was time to use the GI Bill to reach a conclusive result and completely reset my career trajectory at almost forty years old.

I have been taking my three-five year plan very seriously since I started college back up again. I've already experienced strikes one and two, and I need to connect with this one and make sure all the hard work pays off and lands me on a nice career trajectory. I am trying to embrace a bit of elasticity because I know many friends who have pursued an MBA and ended up landing a job that they did not anticipate, but the MBA got their foot in the door. The ones that I have talked to are happy and are doing well, and I am going to try and replicate their success and establish myself with a real career. That said, I must also throw caution to the wind and make sure that the job is fulfilling and not asking too much out of me where it affects my personal and family life either

What Have You Learned About Yourself?

I have learned that I have the natural ability for empathy to allow me to sense others' feelings, soothe people in distress, and understand their unique situation. This has helped me bring emotional awareness to conversations. I also prefer finding a consensus and avoid conflict. My appreciation for harmony has enabled me to bring clarity to situations and allow for a consensus while reducing misunderstandings. My problem-solving comes naturally to me. Also, I recognize the potential in others and enjoy cultivating their growth. My developer strength allows me to mentor colleagues and employees. As a student in the MS LEAD program, I have aspirations to advance my career over the next three to five years to become a landlord who can self-manage properties.

What Insights Did You Have?

I had several insights from the StrenghtsFinder results and career goals worksheet. First, my natural empathy can be an asset in management or as a future small business owner by helping me understand employees' perspectives and provide compassionate leadership. However, I need to set boundaries to avoid burnout. Second, my preference for harmony might suggest that I would excel at resolving conflicts and bringing people together in the workplace. But I need to get more comfortable with productive disagreement. Third, my restorative strength indicates that I am skilled at recognizing what is wrong and restoring order. I should leverage this in developing solutions but be mindful not to become too focused on fixing what is already broken versus building what is possible. Fourth, my ability to appreciate people's uniqueness through individualization can help me lead a diverse team by understanding different needs. I should be careful not to stereotype, though. Fifth, my ambitious professional goals reflect my orientation toward achievement. By staying focused on my vision while balancing my people-orientation will help me with continued growth. And finally, aligning work that allows me to utilize my empathetic and collaborative strengths while providing stability is likely to help me the most in fulfilling my career.

Based on what you discovered, what are the implications for any of the followingyour current or future work? Your personal life? Your family life?

Current/Future Work

My empathetic and collaborative strengths have significant implications for my work life. My talents seem to be well-suited for leadership roles that involve managing, mentoring, and developing employees. Jobs that allow me to build consensus and nurture others' potential can be very rewarding for me. To be an effective manager or leader, I may need to improve my ability to give tough feedback and set boundaries. To help reach my ambitious career goals, including being a landlord who can self-manage rental properties, I may need to seek mentors to grow my leadership skills for this future career goal.

Personal Life

In my personal relationships, my strengths point to the importance of close connections, cooperation, and harmony for my well-being. If I continue surrounding myself with similar traits as mine it will likely be more enjoyable than being surrounded with those that favor a competitive personality. I probably play the role of peacekeeper in disputes and try to "fix" problems among my friends and family. I need to learn to set emotional boundaries with others' demands to avoid burnout.

Family Life

My talents create implications for my family life. My natural abilities to empathize, resolve conflicts, and develop others will likely lead to fostering a happy home environment. I enjoy quality time, deep connections, and mentoring younger relatives, including my niece, to help them grow. However, I need to take care not to problem-solve for family members when working through issues independently because it would benefit their own development.

Overall, I think that my increased self-awareness has allowed me, and will allow me, to continue building on my strengths across work, relationships, and family while recognizing when to set boundaries or further develop more skills to broaden my untapped potential.
