Leaders with influence have the ability to change the trajectory of the journey of their followers. Influence can be defined as the ability to affect the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, and it requires developing a strong emotional connection with yourself and others (Laker & Patel, 2020). Influential leaders are considered to be kind, respectful, selfless, patient, committed, communicative, and self-aware, among many other things. Often times individuals gravitate toward these types of influential people. In the assigned reading, "4 Keys to Strengthen Your Ability to Influence Others", specific skills were emphasized. Out of the skills noted, I believe I've used "building and maintaining trust" most successfully.
I have utilized this skill most successfully in my field because law enforcement requires the development of relationships and relationships are built on trust. I had to master the skill of building and maintaining trust in order to cultivate meaningful relationships with coworkers, squad partners, the community, etc. Maintaining this trust led to more cooperation and understanding between others and I because a rapport had been built. On the police department our trust was built in different ways. Part of our trust in each other was built by being knowledgeable of standard operating procedures, how to handle certain situations, and how to do our job overall. This knowledge resulted in trust in our abilities by our partners and a trust that we were capable of keeping each other safe. For example, as a primary squad dispatched to an incident, other officers were willing to follow my leadership, as they trusted that I was knowledgeable enough to handle the situation, they trusted my abilities. This trust was maintained by continuing to perform my job properly. Trust was built with the community by responding to their emergency calls in a timely fashion, making sure they were safe upon arrival, and resolving the matter at hand. Resolving these issues in the community not only allowed officers to gain the communities trust, but we also earned their respect. The trust that was built also allowed us to have more positive community interaction where we were able to discuss community events, crime prevention, etc.
Skills that I would suggest for a new leader to influence others is charisma, ability to solve problems, self-awareness, critical thinking, empathy, and good communication. Charisma, problem solving, and critical thinking skills help gain the admiration of followers. Self-awareness, good communication, and empathy help gain the trust of followers. There are many skills that I think leaders can develop to influence others, in addition to the skills noted.
what is your thoughts on what you read above? what skills that I use stood out the most to you and why? ... also what other skills would you suggest for a new leader to influence others?
