Leadership (through a traditional lens of principalship) at a school in northern Vermont has turned over three times in three years. This assignment will focus on the principal as the leader for simplicity's sake. Some people are born natural leaders, and some leadership is learned, but all leaders influence others in some way (Black et al., 2019). On top of principal turnover, there has been significant employee turnover as well, leaving all employees feeling the need of leadership. Thankfully, the principal is not transactional, but rather transformational and visionary; she makes changes and is inspirational through the belief of her mission (Black et al., 2019). Because the school was starting from nothing, it was a simple task to get employees on board with needing a mission and vision for our school. Many staff meetings were spent collaboratively brainstorming, discussing, and voting upon the core values as a staff body. Together, with the guidance of the new leader, four new core values were generated including safety, learning, passion, and kindness. Those are the values that will bind the school together through turmoil and provide direction when feeling lost. These are communicated frequently with our staff and students at each weekly assembly and classes take turn showcasing these core values in front of the school.
