BACKGROUND

Most people view a resume as functional and practical; fewer people recognize it as a persuasivedocument. Your resume will be judged against dozens, sometimes hundreds of others. Thus, what will separate your qualifications from another's so that you get an interview?

Please know a professional or career oriented resumeis a little different than the one you may have submitted to try and get a summer job when you were in your late teens or early 20s. For example, your resume should include a career summary or employee profilesection at the top about yourself. This brief paragraph should include how many years of experience you have in your field as well as highlight key skills/transferable skills that are directly related to the skills required for the job posting/company to which you are applying.

Additionally, how you showcase your skills in a professional resume should be much more detailedthan a simple bulleted list of single words stuck hastily at the top. No. Now is the time for headings and subheadings related to skills, projects, and experience that you have.

YOUR TASK

Your task is to find a REAL job adrelated to your program or program field and "apply" to it via a tailored resume. This job ad should be an 'entry level management' position. You MUSTinclude this job ad with your submission in the form of a PDF in the submissions folder or there

is a penalty(read on...). Don't worry if you don't have the minimum number of years of experience in the field or if you don't live near the place of employment. For the purposes of this assignment, we'll assume you do.

NOTE: SURVEYING AND GEOINFORMATION AS A PROFESSION

As stated above, resumes are persuasive documents, and thus content, formatting, and organization will vary from student to student; however, at minimum you are expected to have the following components (order and section name may vary):

  • Proper header (with real or made up contact info)
  • Career summary
  • Education
  • Relevant skills and experience (embedded in work history, or via headings/subheadings and bulletsor bothdepending on whether your resume is functional, chronological, or a combinationof both)
  • Employment history

Other sections to include would be publications, volunteer work, memberships, awards, special skills (both hard and soft, important ones but potentially not applicable enough to frontload in the resume) or any other work related content you feel is worthy to include. Please do NOT include a hobbies or interests section unless DIRECTLY RELATED to the job advertisement. For example, being a webmaster could be potentially useful to employers, while collecting seashells is not (one assumes so, anyway).

One final reminder: Do NOT include a photo(s) of yourself or any personal information about yourself such as your age, marital status, or religion. Do not use personal pronouns like "I" either.

MECHANICS: As discussed in class, attention to grammar and spelling is priority one. Thus, one full mark will be deducted for each spelling/punctuation/ridiculous grammar error you make. That may seem harsh, but never forget the REAL point here: already your application has been rejected and someone else has your job.
