ADDICTION SCREENING AND ASSESSMENT

Consider the following scenario:

Jerry is a 60-year-old male who has just arrived at the hospital complaining of chest pain. The attending doctor performs an electrocardiogram (EKG), a quick and inexpensive test designed to measure electrical signals in the heart. The EKG is abnormal, suggesting that Jerry may be having a heart attack. Based on the results of the EKG and Jerry's symptoms, the doctor orders a more extensive test called an angiogram to further assess the problem. The angiogram reveals that Jerry has a blockage in one if his major arteries. Based on this information, the doctor tells Jerry that he needs triple bypass surgery to correct the blockage.

Just as medical doctors screen and assess patients for physical illness, addiction professionals screen and assess service users for addiction. In this Assignment, you will explore the purpose of screening and assessment, their similarities and differences, and the relationship between the two.
