Leith Caledonian Cricket Club hires as its professional for the new season Foster Castlemaine, the well-known Australian Test player. The contract is formed by a brief exchange of emails in which it is stated that Foster will be paid on a monthly basis and provided with suitable accommodation and a car sponsored by the Club President's construction firm. When he arrives in April, Foster is given a small room in the Club pavilion which, he is told, is a temporary arrangement until his house, which is on an estate being built by the Club President's firm, is completed. In the early weeks of the season, Foster is a great success on the playing side and Leith Caledonian quickly get to the top of the league. However, it is at once apparent that he does not take club practice nights very seriously, and the only coaching of members which he provides is by making coarsely humorous and derogatory remarks about theirtechnical and other inadequacies in the game and in life. He refuses point-blank to look after the Under-15 and Under-18 sides. Socially, he is rather boisterous and, in his cups, he has an unfortunate tendency to take out his aggression on members of opposing clubs and their property, sometimes wielding his bat in a threatening manner. In late June he is found guilty of drunken driving after a crash in his sponsored car. The Club Committee, embarrassed by the adverse publicity which this incident attracts, and by the consequent ire of the President and the board of his firm, decides to withhold 50% of Foster's fee for June. The Committee also sends him a letter explaining this retention, as well as stating what his coaching responsibilities are and reminding him of the general high standard of conduct expected of the Leith Caledonian Professional. Foster's response is to pack his bags, fly home to Australia and organise a charity event, walking from Sydney, New South Wales, to Perth, Western Australia, along with a herd of kangaroos. He also raises an action against the Club for breach of contract, pointing out that he was never provided with the promised accommodation. Advise the Club
