Lena's Interview: Transcript I felt really good preparing for the interview. I'd submitted the required application, with rsum, cover letter, and reference list, and I also sent a link to my website, which shows what I've studied and some stuff about my volunteer work. Since I have a 3.5 GPA and have volunteered with a couple of sports teams, I thought that would help my chances. And I'd done a ton of research on The Rabbits and its organizational structure, so I felt good. My interview was at 10 a.m., but my class didn't end until 9:45, so I had to rush and ended up getting there maybe a minute or two past 10. I think I looked OK, though. I wore a nice blouse, blazer, and pants. I even wore heels and had brushed my hair for a change! The receptionist called the manager, Mr. Smith, as soon as I arrived, and he came out to greet me immediately. I smiled and extended my hand to shake his; I think I put out a pretty firm handshake. I've always heard that those "fish" handshakes are the worst! We sat down at a table in a conference room, and I put my memo pad and smartphone on the table. I left my phone on in case my mom needed to call, since she has anxiety issues. The phone buzzed three or four times during the interview with text messages, and I had to look down to see who it was, but that just took a few seconds. Mr. Smith started with the question of "What do you know about us?," and I was able to answer that really thoroughly since I'd researched it so well. And I think he was impressed: he said I might know more background about the organization than he did! I tried to have an immediate answer for every question Mr. Smith asked. I figured if I paused to think, he might think I didn't know the answer. One time I guess I was thinking too fast, because he mentioned a "precedent" being followed at the organization, and I immediately made a face and said, "Oh, no! Don't get me started on Trump!" He looked at me kind of weirdly but didn't say anything, and then he went on with other questions. I had been up till 4 a.m. this morning, so I was exhausted, and it showed, I think. Once, in fact, I caught myself dozing off as Mr. Smith was asking a question. I tried to recover by just asking him to repeat the question, but that was a little embarrassing. When Mr. Smith asked me if I had any questions for him, I asked him what he found most enjoyable about working there and what The Rabbits really needed in this position. And I'd been wondering about the starting salary, so I asked him how much the position would pay. As soon as the interview was over, I went to McDonald's and tweeted a little about the interview. I tried to be witty, with tweets like "I'll be the next boss at The Rabbits!" I posted a little to Facebook, too, and as I was messing on that site, I realized that all my privacy settings were turned off. I hope Mr. Smith hadn't checked my Facebook page recently; I had a few risqu photos up there. Then I went home and sent a thank-you email to Mr. Smith that evening. What do you think? Do I have a chance?
