Lesson 2 Simulation-Based ProblemAnalyzing Electromagnetic Waves

Purpose:Investigate the frequency, wavelength, electric field amplitude, and energy of an electromagnetic wave.

Overview:Measure the wavelength and electric field amplitude of a visible laser source. Apply the relationship between wavelength and frequency to find the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation. Determine the intensity of the electromagnetic wave from the electric field amplitude.

Submission Instructions: After you have engaged the simulation experiment and formulated answers to the questions in the lab document, you will need to enter you findings into the Lesson 2 Simulation Based Problem Report. This is due Sunday of week 2.

Set Up Directions

  1. Navigate to Electromagnetic Waves Simulation link above
  2. Choose "Light"
  3. Turn on "Graph"
  4. Push the Amplitude Control to max.
  5. Click the button on the laser to see the propagating light waves

Measurement Directions

  1. Place the measuring tape into the light room and verify that the starting green wavelength is 500nm long.
  2. Adjust the frequency to approximately each of the same three frequencies shown in the diagram below. Measure the wavelength at each frequency. Enter the wavelength values into the 2nd column of Table 1. Include correct units.
