Lewis is a non-faculty member who works for Maryville University in the IT department working on course design within Canvas. Lewis has worked for Maryville for about ten years. Recently, Lewis developed several severe mental health issues that required him to attend residential mental health treatment for 30 days. Before going into residential mental health treatment, Lewis provided Maryville with a notice that he would not be able to work for a month, completed Maryvilles FMLA packet, and obtained his medical records and doctor's certification for his situation. He submitted all of these items to his supervisor as is required by Maryvilles FMLA policy. Maryville reviewed the packet and denied Lewiss request because they felt the packet provided insufficient information about Lewis situation and did not indicate he had the type of severe mental health condition that required 30 days of FMLA leave. After Maryville informed Lewis of their decision, Lewis immediately talked to his medical providers, and they submitted additional records and doctors explanations directly to Lewiss supervisor. Two days later, Maryville told Lewis they were terminating him for failure to supply medical information.
