Like most of my classmates, I, too, can share that I've witnessed a handful of situations in which implicit bias has affected the work space and/or the way leadership is exercised in the workplace. These situations have almost always impacted the individuals involved - both leaders and employees. One particular instance that comes to mind occurred while I was working at the Orange County District Attorney's office as a victim advocate. Early in my career, I was assigned to work with a small team made up of one prosecutor, one investigator, one paralegal, and one advocate (me). Our task was to create a protocol and new policies to tackle the backlog of untested rape kits in OC. The backlog held over 6,000 kits, with some dating back several decades and truly, it was one of my first passion projects in this field. Going into this project, I felt a huge drive to be able to help hundreds of survivors through this new grant and project.
