Linear Programming Write it Out (AP)

Instructions: This assignment contains 2 parts: 1) Formulate this problem as a LINEAR PROGRAM 2) Solve the LINEAR PROGRAM in Excel. Part 1 should be submitted by taking a picture of the LINEAR PROGRAM written out on a piece of paper. To answer part 2 you will answer a few questions in the quiz.

You work for the BIT Drill Company which manufactures two types of drills: a corded model and a cordless model. You have contracted to supply a national retail chain with a total of 30,000 corded drills and 16,000 cordless drills. However, BITs production capability is limited in three departments: production, testing, and packaging. The following table summarizes the hours of processing time available and the processing time required by each department, for both types of drills:

BIT makes its corded drill in-house for $52 and its cordless drill for $85. Alternatively, it can buy corded and cordless;ljml;m drills from another source for $67 and $95, respectively. To satisfy union obligations BIT will buy no more than 2,000 of each type of drill. How many corded and cordless drills should the BIT Drill Company make and how many should it buy from its competitor in order to fulfill its contract in the least costly manner?

1. Formulate this problem as a LINEAR PROGRAM.

• Make sure the variables are clearly defined.
• The complete formulas (and not just tables of numbers) should be written out.
• Submit a picture of the LINEAR PROGRAM written out on a piece of paper.

2. Solve this problem using Solver (once you have the optimal solution you should open and take the quiz). Also, it is okay if the optimal solution says to make a fraction of a product at least for the quiz.
