Attached you will find the APD use of force report for 2020. On pages 8-9, you will see the official officer-involved shooting data for 2020. (15 officers involved in 10 discharge of weapon incidents.) I have also provided the links for two sources that keep records of APD officer-involved weapons discharge. (When looking over the data, you will find 14 officer-involved shootings, despite the official number being 10.) 1. Conceptualize what an "APD officer-involved shooting" is. 2. Each source has a different "N" (APD=10, GBI=12, & Mainline=14) due to how they operationalize an "APD officer-involved shooting." Identify the definition that each source used. 3. Discuss the pros and cons of each definition.
For the SPSS part of the assignment, we will use the GBI's number of cases. You need to create an SPSS file for the 12 officer-involved shootings. Using information gathered from the GBI website, APD use of force report for 2020, and the Mainline Website, create the following variables for each case in an SPSS file. (If the information is unknown, make sure to code it appropriately.) For some of the incidents, you will have multiple officers, and/or multiple suspects, and/or multiple addresses. You must decide how you are going to handle that in the data input process. Make sure that you indicate how you code each variable (I.e., 1=Male; 2=Female).
1. Date of Incident 2. Time of incident 3. Location of incident 4. Call Type 5. Name of Subject 6. Status of Suspect 7. Suspect Age 8. Suspect Race 9. Suspect Gender 10. Name of Officer 11. Statiu of Officer 12. Officer Race 13. Officer Gender
Once you have entered the data, write a descriptive statistic section on the data. Make sure to use charts and tables as necessary. After you write your descriptive statistics, write a limitations section discussing the discrepancies in the information used to create the data set.Discuss why the APD may have chosen to leave the additional incidents out of their official report.Does their decision to leave out the additional data affect the reliability and validity of the report? Why or why not?
I have also attached the official raw crime data for the APD in 2020. Would the official secondary data have been much help in creating your SPSS file? Why or why not? How does this influence the validity of the raw data? When looking at the two halves of 2020's data, what are some things you would need to consider if you needed to merge the data into a whole year? (Do not merge them, just discuss some of the changes you would need to make first before you could do the merger)
