Identification Undercover investigators should always have personal papers to document the role they are playing. If investigators are assuming certain occupational or professional credentials, they should have documentationa union card or a wallet-size professional license or diploma, for example. cords If an investigator is as- ' identity that could be checked through the examination of public or private re- cords, then those records need to be created and placed at the location that might be the subject of an inquiry, such as the personnel office of a cor- poration. Undercover investigators should have a complete background history prepared for them, including name, current and past addresses, and past working experience. Cover Story A fictitious personal historya cover storyshould be prepared for the under- cover investigator. Investigators should have a thorough knowledge of the contents of their as- sumed history, and documentation should exist to prove this personal history. Getting In Only one or two people in an orga- nization should know that an undercover inves- tigator is joining the organization. The security director and the head of personnel, if not subjects in the investigation, should be notified; but it must be emphasized in the strongest manner possible that this information has to remain confidential. Knowledge of Investigation Subjects Un- dercovers must be thoroughly briefed on the subjects involved in the investigation. They should know, in particular, of the existence of possible dangers they could experience and how to avoid them. Knowledge of Geographic Area Undercov- ers must have detailed knowledge of the geo- graphic area of the investigation to ensure that they move about expeditiously and safely there. Furthermore, there is no better indication that a person may be an imposter than lack of knowl- edge about key buildings, highways, or other lo- cations with which those who live in or frequent the area are familiar
