Article:
Age-related macular degeneration or AMD is the leading cause of vision loss and occurs because of damage to the retina. (Ou & Wykoff, 2017, para. 1.) Researchers have discovered that the retina is susceptible to oxidative stress which is the cause of AMD. (Ou & Wykoff, 2017, para. 4.) Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. (Karthik, 2021, para. 1.) The Age-Related Eye Disease Study found that the progression and development of the disease are slowed by the increased intake of antioxidants and minerals, specifically vitamin C, E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper. Polyunsaturated fatty acids were also reported to reduce the risk of AMD. (Ou & Wykoff, 2017, para. 5.) To reduce the risk of AMD, clinicians recommend a diet of foods with a lower glycemic index and high vitamin content. (Ou & Wykoff, 2017, para. 7.)
