Listen to https://www.npr.org/programs/ted-radio-hour/485704159/what-makes-us-us
Reflect on the following aspects:
Aspect A: The broadcast starts with an introduction of the genome and how knowing your code can identify aspects of your self such as disease and personality. What is one aspect of yourself that you would like to know more about if you could map your entire genome. Why would you want to know that and how would you use the information that you found if you could get your map.
Aspect B: The broadcast discussed gene editing and shared in a conversation with Sam Sternburg about this editing. Take a moment to discuss the presented technology that could edit genes. If you had this technology, how would you use it to address and change/prevent something? What are your thoughts on using this technology?
Aspect C: Nature is defined as our genetic makeup and nurture is defined as our environmental makeup. Stephen Pinker talks about the Nature/Nurture debate in this video. Reflecting on yourself or someone in your life, what is one characteristic that you would confidently identify as being shaped by genetics and what is one characteristic that you would confidently identify as being shaped by environment?
Aspect D: Anil Seth talks about consciousness toward the end of the video. A term was used and discussed. Discuss this term that describes our means of interpreting perceptions. Thinking about interactions that you have in the world, reflect on an interaction or experience that might be influenced by this concept.
OPTION A: In this unit there was a lot of information provided about the stages of prenatal development and the importance of those stages of development.
- Label and describe each of the three stages of prenatal development.
- Briefly describe one aspect of a person's genetic makeup and how that is shaped from conception.
- When a developing baby is exposed to various circumstances while in the uterus there can be a significant impact. Identify the term used for this exposure and describe one such substance that could be potentially harmful.
OPTION B: Piaget described a series of cognitive stages that a young child progresses through.
- List each of Piaget's stages of development and describe the level of cognitive capacity that is present in each of those stages.
- Briefly describe how a child is "tested" to determine what stage of development they are in. Pick at least one of the strategies you have learned about.
- Briefly discuss your thoughts on cognitive development. Do you think that Piaget's description of cognitive development in early childhood is accurate? Use information you have learned to support your view.
OPTION C: Harry Harlow and Mary Ainsworth both studied attachment and the impact of parental interactions.
- Briefly recap the Harlow Monkey experiment and summarize the findings.
- Briefly recap the Ainsworth Strange study and summarize the findings.
- When you consider the role of parental involvement with children, what do you think is one important aspect that is necessary for the success of child development and healthy emotional growth. Make sure to use what you have learned to support your view.
