4. Some people can trace their lineage back to their immigration from another nation. African American's often find that their understanding of their lineage begins with slavery in the U.S., but they do not know with certainty the nation of their origin. Speak with your family to discover the nation(s) of your origin. What are those origins? Some people simply do not know because families did not keep track of that history and many adoptions shield parental history. How does that knowledge, or lack of knowledge, affect your perception of self?
5. The U.S. constitution specifically states that all men are created equal. Many chose that to mean that all white men are created equal but that others, such as blacks and women, were not equal to white men. As a result, the 14th amendment was passed.
