Lofty owns a property in a country village and is an avid collector of antique military objects. He keeps an old air raid siren in his back garden, which he sounds once a month during the day to keep it in working order. Lofty usually sounds the siren for fifteen minutes. Frank and Pat, his retired next-door neighbours, are particularly disturbed by this noise, which has also caused Frank to develop a persistent hearing problem.

Lofty also owns a motorised tank. He has made a tenancy arrangement with the local council whereby he is permitted keep it in a field belonging to them and to drive it around the field every few months to keep it in working order. The tank releases large quantities of diesel fumes, which are gradually being deposited on the external whitewashed walls of Sharon's thatched cottage sited adjacent to the field.

In addition, Lofty collects large military balloons (which were used to distract bomber planes), which he keeps fastened in his back garden. Two balloons become loose in strong winds. One floats into the spire of the village church, damaging the stonework. Another lands on a farm owned by Ian, close to his collection of beehives. Gas is slowly released from the balloon as it deflates and it contaminates the honey in the hives. Ian loses six months' worth production of his expensive jarred organic honey in consequence.

Advise Frank, Pat, Sharon, the village church and Ian upon any remedies they may seek in the tort of private nuisance and/or under the rule in Rylands v Fletcher.
