Log exercise:

We are stranded on an island.

It's 5 pm and you decide to get a drink. You find the cooler open in the baking sun and the drinks will soon be undrinkable if not already. You want to find out who left the cooler open.

The drinks were at a temperature of 40 when initially put in the closed cooler. The temperature on the island is a constant 80. You noticed that everyone was walking around the island in pairs. It also turns out that the time was recorded as each pair of friends walked past the cooler. Figuring out the time the cooler was opened would likely narrow down the suspects.

You recorded the times that each pair walked past the cooler and therefore had the opportunity to leave the cooler open:

You record the temperature of the drinks at 5 pm to be 70 and exactly 1 hour later they are 72.70.

  1. What formula are you using to work out the temperature change of a substance?
  2. What are the variables that represent constants?
  3. What are the values of the constants?
  4. What is the exact time the cooler was opened?
  5. Who is the most likely pair of suspects?
