Collaboration is vital when it comes to solving problems. With this fast-changing world educators must have effective collaboration and problem-solving skills to be able to address challenging issues that arise in education. As mentioned in Friend (2021), no matter your role as an educator our days are spent solving problems. (p. 110) The best way for educators to problem solve is to work together to find a solution.

In education we are consistently problem solving in our daily duties in different ways. "You can do this when you decide which materials, activities, interventions, therapeutic techniques, or equipment would be best used with particular students." (Friend, 2021, p. 110) Not only do educators problem solve alone but they group problem solve as well. An example of group problem solving is a team meeting determining appropriate interventions for a student. This can also include special education meetings, placement decisions, accommodations, and modifications. As stated in Friend (2021), one of the most fundamental components to success is group problem solving. (p. 111) Unfortunately, educators often feel they have the natural skills to group problem solve since they spend so much time problem solving alone. But it is important to realize that group problem solving requires additional skills.

In having a systematic method to collaborative problem solving ensure everyone is following the process. As mentioned in Friend (2021), typically it is impossible to collaborate with colleagues and parents without a systematic and effective problem-solving process. (p. 111) The process allows for control and organization. This does not only pertain to education but to other fields and sectors as well. One way of problem solving is to have a series of steps. In Friend (2021) a problem-solving model is the following order Analyze the Problem-Solving Context, Identify the Problem, Generate Solutions, Evaluate Potential Solutions, Select the Solution(s), Implement the Solution(s), and Evaluate Outcomes. (p. 119) Another problem-solving method is the "yes, and" thinking that helps with building and valuing other's ideas. As mentioned on Forbes (2016), the "yes, and" thinking is to move away from the polarized (either/or) thinking. This helps with supporting a suggested idea and building on the idea to make it better.

In collaborative problem solving not only is the systematic approach a critical piece but so is the team members relationship. It is vital that the team members have mutual respect with each other. If a team is able to interact together, depend on each other, share their expertise without judgement, open honest conversation, and collaborate to reach a common goal then that is a team that is able to work well together. As mentioned in Wrike (2024), the lines of communication among the team must be kept open. This also allows trust to be built between the team members. "The collaborative problem-solving approach paves ways to open communication, trust, better planning and smooth implementation of a plan or strategy." (Forbes, 2016)

It is imperative for collaborative teams to effectively work together in order to make decisions over different areas. This could include but not limited to behavior, academics, implantation of plans or services, and communication with teachers and/or parents. When working collaboratively with others it is important to remember not to be disrespectful, cut off others, and overtalk to not break trust and respect. To maintain success there needs to be a healthy environment which allows the team to be able to work together and have better results.

When there is collaboration, a systematic problem solving process, and a well working team then it can lead to having positive solutions and environment. Which then allows educators the chance to focus on the areas of need, able to generate ideas, be productive, and find appropriate solutions. We must remember there will be disagreements but we must remain open, supportive, and maintain a place everyone is free to voice their ideas. Great teams learn that collaborative problem solving skills are built on positive relationships.
