Lookism Activity regarding (Diversity/social skill development

Goal: To enhance social skills development by illustrating how our word affect people.

You will need an apple and knife for this discussion. The first thing you need to do is look at your apple and hold it in your hands. Then you will need to repeat the following directions six times: Look at the apple and say something mean to it and then drop it either on a table of floor. Once you have done these six different times, and then cut the apple in half and lay it in the center of the table, allowing it to get brown. Then hold the apple in your hand again and this time say six nice things about the apple. There are a lot of people feel like that apple-all bruised and battered because they have heard mean things all their lives. They feel like no one cares about them and no one want to be their friend. Our words can make people feel like that apple.

How does being complimented feel? Are compliments easy to say? Why or Why not? Was it easier to be mean or to give complaints? Why?

Looking at your apple after it has been battered down and turned brown would you want to eat that apple or get another shiny one? Why or Why not?
