Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. It kills more patients each year than any other cancer, with the death rate from lung cancer greater than that of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Lifestyle factors, in particular smoking, play an important role with an estimated 80% of lung cancer deaths linked to cigarette smoking. Since men are more likely to smoke than women, the belief is that men are more likely to develop cancer than women. Test this belief. Four hundred women above age 55 years were randomly selected and 20 had developed lung cancer. A random sample of 500 men was selected and 28 had developed lung cancer. Test the claim that the rate of cancer is higher for men than for women. (a) Null and Alternative Hypothesis (2 pts) (b) Find the Test Statistic using the formula.
