Wi-fi uses radio signals to transmit digital signals to mobile phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers. For Wi-fi signals to be transmitted, a wireless access point is required. If you have a home wireless router, this acts as both the router (to transmit information to and from your Internet connection) as well as a wireless access point. In business settings, specialised wireless access points are used to cover large areas. These access points do not directly transmit your information to and from the Internet; rather they send the information to a much larger router, which handles large amounts of Internet traffic. For our purposes in this case study, you will be concerning yourself only with the wireless access points and not the IT infrastructure required to communicate with the Internet itself. For those of you who are technology minded, things have been simplified to focus on the Project Management aspects rather than being bogged down in technical details. Case study details A number of years ago Deakin University had a limited Wi-fi network that was struggling to meet the increasing demands of students needing to access the University's network using their wireless devices. There were poor coverage areas, dropouts, and insufficient bandwidth to provide sufficiently fast speeds. Students were beginning to move away from the computer labs that provided high speed Internet through hard-connected computers. Wireless devices are being used more and more within the lecture rooms and students are taking advantage of the mobility to study in quiet, less used areas of the university. Of course, Deakin now provides an excellent Wi-fi experience and this work has been completed. There were many complex parts to replacing the Internet infrastructure at Deakin, but as students of MIS398 Project Management, you will be focusing on one element of the Wi-fi implementation, the planning and installation of a brand new set of wireless access points to provide excellent coverage for all students across the Burwood, Geelong and Warrnambool campuses. Mr Confalonieri has been mandated by the University Executive to complete the new roll out within 18 months as they seek to provide students will an improved digital experience. Mr Confalonieri will be taking his directions from the University Executive. Your team will be working directly with Mr Confalonieri on the implementation of this project. Project Scope This project will require planning and implementing the installation of a wireless access points across the entire Burwood, Geelong and Warrnambool campuses. Technology details Mr Confalonieri has already had a team run a project to research the best wireless access points to be installed on all campuses. The University has decided to use the Ubiquiti Unifi access points. The particular model will be the UAP-AC-PRO as it allows for both indoor and outdoor usage. The UAP-AC-PRO has an unobstructed range of 122m, this range diminishes based on physical barriers such as walls, floors and ceilings.
