Machining Time and Cost Consider a metallic cylinder that will be turned on a lathe. The rod is initially 10 cm in diameter and is 50 cm long. The blank will be turned as shown in Figure 1. A length of 15 cm will be reduced to 9 cm and the other 30 cm will be turned into 8.5 cm; 5 cm of the original stock will not be turned and are used for fixation into the spindle. 10 cm- -50 cm- -15 cm- -30 cm Figure 1 The original stock (left) will be turned on the lathe machine into the finished part (right). You should be cutting 400 of these parts. The cutting tool you are using has a cutting life of 75 min at which the tool should be changed. Changing the tool takes 3 min and the setup time of each part is 1 min. The hourly rate of the worker cutting the part is QAR 50.00 and the overhead is 50%. Given the above, answer the following questions: 1. What is the cutting time for each part? 2. What is the cutting time for all the parts? 3. How many tools will you use to cut the 400 parts? 4. What is the total time you need to finish the cutting of 400 parts (including setup, tool change and cutting time)? 5. When making 400 parts as described above, what is the cost per part?
