There are different forms of behavior therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and rational emotive behavior therapy. These types of therapy help one notice negative thoughts and then reform them positively. For example, the therapist working with Gwen is helping Gwen to practice mindfulness as this will help Gwen refocus her thoughts positively. Therefore, it helps one to understand how their feelings affect their behavior.

A feature of rational emotive behavior therapy is that it puts forward a distinctive "ABC" model, which highlights key inferential aspects of "A" and argues that "C" can be emotive, behavioral, and cognitive (Dryden & David, 2008, p. 197). It also stresses that "ABCs" are best understood within a situational context (Dryden & David, 2008, p.197)for example, Gwen. To a certain extent, the ABC model can help explain how dysfunctional thoughts develop (Li & Lee, 2011, p. 209).

One could put the ABC model in a mathematical equation where A+B = C because A is the activating event, B is one's belief of the event, rational or irrational, and C is the emotional or behavioral consequence. Behavior therapy focuses on B or beliefs to ensure that C or consequences end positively. Rational emotive behavior therapy does not just suggest disputing clients' irrational beliefs; it also encourages clients to develop and strengthen rational beliefs (Dryden & David, 2008, p.197). For example, Gwen realizes through the therapy session that she wants to ask for more support from her coworkers and husband and tells the therapist she will practice mindfulness daily. Therefore, Gwen developed more rational thoughts that could help to reduce her stress and help her be relaxed.
