Behavior therapy focuses on replacing negative habits and behaviors with positive ones. The ABC model is a theory proposed by the cognitive psychotherapist Albert Ellis (1913-2007), which tries to explain why people, despite experiencing the same event, can develop different responses based on their own beliefs.

These beliefs are a fundamental pillar when it comes to understanding how a person sees the world and how they decide to face the demands of daily life. The idea behind the model is inspired by a quote from the Greek philosopher Epictetus, "people are not upset by facts, but by what they think about facts." In other words, it is not the event itself that positively or negatively affects a person, but the way the individual sees and treats it.

This method is the most used for therapies because professionals can, with this behavior therapy model, specifically identify the problem through the following steps with A (the event, experience or memory is recognized), B (the belief system that the person has, the way of thinking about the problem), and C (the emotional or behavioral consequences).

I believe that each human being when faced with a problem influences my personal beliefs and my way of thinking. My own mind can put me at risk in some situations. In Gwen's therapy, the therapist uses the ABC method. The A is the situation when Gwen takes care of her mother every day and is tired. When the therapist asks Gwen why she doesn't ask her husband for help with her mother, she says no because it is her responsibility, which reflects the B part of this therapy. The consequence is C that by not asking for help, this situation brings stress and consequences to Gwen.
