The article selected for this discussion was research conducted by Abdulrahman et al. (2018), which seeks to investigate the impact of podcasts on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' listening comprehension. The research design used in this study was a Quasi-experimental method with a total sample of 60 students, 30 in the experimental and the other 30 in the controlled group.
The authors used One Way ANOVA to provide additional data analysis and get a more comprehensive output of the collected information. The authors also used the One Way ANOVA in the SPSS (version 20) to provide a more accurate outlook on the study conducted (Abdulrahman et al., 2018).
The One Way ANOVA is not necessarily the most appropriate choice but more likely an additional option to produce a more all-inclusive statistical description. One Way ANOVA provides information to compare the means of two or more groups and provides the F-test component, which indicates any significant difference in the means of both groups. Therefore, it is important, depending on the type or nature of the study conducted. It is wise to do One Way ANOVA if a researcher is comparing two or more dependent variables in relation to the independent variable studied (University Libraries, 2022).
The authors displayed the results of the One-Way ANOVA information in a table and also explained the data produced in the table with regard to the variables researched. From the table produced, the researchers could deduce that ANOVA test sig value was 0.010, which was less than 0.05, indicating a significant impact of podcasts on the EFL students' listening comprehension (Abdulrahman et al., 2018). The null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted (Abdulrahman et al., 2018). The table and the stand-alone explanation in words provided more understanding and clarification on the research results.
The authors did not report any information effect size as this could shed some light on the significance of the sample on the actual population. A larger effect size would give more applicable significance, whereas a smaller effect size would indicate lower realistic significance (Bhandari, 2020).
